
The purpose of this course is to train instructor candidates to teach basic-level Lifeguarding, Waterfront Lifeguarding, and Shallow Water Attendant (all including First Aid), Lifeguard Management, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Administering Emergency Oxygen, Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission and Basic Water Rescue courses. Instructor candidates also will become familiar with Guard Start: Lifeguarding Tomorrow and the Water Safety presentations. - Note - This course will include information for both traditional pools and non-surf, open-water environments.
Prerequisites: (must be successfully completed or you will NOT be allowed to enter the course or receive a refund)
- 17 Years of age prior to the last scheduled day of class.
- Possess a Fundamentals of Instructor Training Certificate (offered as part of this course).
- Successfully pass the precourse written exam with a score of 80 percent or higher for each of the sections.
- Swim 550 yards (about 500 meters)continuously (NO STOPPING), using these strokes in the following order:
- 200 yards front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabliizing propellant kick;
- 200 yards breastroke using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence;
- 150 yards of either front crawl or breastroke or combination.
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breastroke, surface dive 7 to 10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object (in both hands and object on your chest) and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
- Swim 5 yards; submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4-7 feet of water; resurface; and swim 5 yards to the side of the pool.
- Demonstrate competency in the final scenarios evaluation.
- Be able to successfully demonstrate all of the skillsfrom the Lifeguard/Waterfront Lifeguard Courses.
Note: Those wishing to only become Lifeguarding Instructors will only have to swim 300 yards.
Certification Requirements:
- Successfully complete the precourse session.
- Attend and actively participate in all course sessions.
- Successfully complete class activities, including the required practice-teaching assignments.
- Complete the Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission Instructor Self-Study/Pre-Test.
- Score at least 80 percent on the basic-level Administering Emergency Oxygen final written exam.
- Score at least 80 percent on the Lifeguarding Instructor Course final written exam.
- To become a Waterfront Lifeguarding Instructor you must also sucessfully complete the Waterfront Lifeguarding final exam.
Students failing to complete either the precourse session or the Instructor Course will not receive a refund.
