
This course provides candidates with the training they need to plan and conduct courses within the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Progrogram. Covers teaching progressions, course and lesson planning, recognizing common skill errors, providing corrective feedback, motor learning, hydrodynamic principles.Through video and hands-on skill building, the course features clearly described and applied teaching strategies, including explanation-demonstration-practice, task setting, station teaching and guided discovery.
Prerequisites:
- Be at least 16 years of age by the last scheduled day of class.
- Have successfully completed Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) (included in ARC Western CT WSI classes);
- Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills:
1. Swim the following strokes consistent with Level 4:
* Front Crawl - 25 yards
* Back Crawl - 25 yards
* Breaststroke - 25 yards
* Elementary Backstroke - 25 yards
* Sidestroke - 25 yards
* Butterfly - 15 yards
2. Maintain position on back 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling).
3. Tread water for 1 minute.
Students must successfully complete prerequisite skills test or you will not be allowed to enter the WSI Course or receive a refund. Upon sucessful completion of classroom, pool and homework activities; practice teaching assignments; and the final written exam, students will receive an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certificate. Students failing to complete the course will not receive a refund.
